Week 1: Execution

week 1:

execution

Sunday morning starts off quietly enough, almost peaceful after the events of the past few days. Today, the alarm on everyone's phone starts at 12 PM, with a reminder of the execution to take place at 1 PM at the stadium. Unlike the Saturday notifications, however, this is the only reminder you get. It appears that attendance is not mandatory this time.

Well. Not for all of you, anyway. One of you feels a compulsion to head to the stadium, heading straight inside and following the staff to ready themselves for what's to come. All others who arrive at the stadium, hero or civilian, are led to spectator seating.

As the clock strikes 1 PM, Argalia walks into the arena. On the opposite end of the field, Nimona steps out to greet them. As long as they both live, neither will able to leave the area, nor will any outsiders be able to enter.

You don't have to watch, of course. That's your choice. But with the event being broadcast all over the city, it may be hard to avoid. In-person or across town, everywhere is buzzing with gossip of the newly discovered villain about to face justice. Regardless of where you go or whether you choose to watch, the only thing to do now is wait.

[a pause.

and then she's a girl again. bleeding from her ears and eyes and nose, squinting in the lights. she wavers, when she straightens, but she doesn't fall. instead, she walks over to her discarded flag, and picks it up in shaky fingers. she brushes at her face with her sleeve, and then makes her way over to argalia, standing over him. she holds the flag tightly. and then crouches.]

... Was that good? [she asks, quietly.] Was it good enough?

Perfect. I'm certain she heard.

[but it isn't over yet, not really. they still haven't finished it; it's only winding down to an end, with the blood that flows from him and drips from her. red notes staining a score written in it (that has always been written in it, from the time he started this a few days ago.)

even with the form it had to take... it's been a worthwhile performance. he can be satisfied with this.

she crouches there, and he turns his attention from the sky above them to look at her.

i was tired. i've been monster all my life, he recalls. i'm just me. ... nobody is ever ready for that.

no, they never are, are they? his breathing is labored, but still:]

We all know what public opinion will say, don't we?

[the hero monster, delivering justice to the villain, the blue reverberation.

he already told her this had nothing to do with playing the villain.]

Kill me as 'just you'. Not as a hero.

[across the way, the phone stops playing music.

she leans heavily against the pole, watching as he turns to look at her. she's killed people before. this isn't new. but she's not sure it was ever like this. not on a stage, not with everybody watching, not as a hero. a hero, a person who drives a sword through the heart of anything different.

we know what the public opinion will be, he says, and then.

kill me as just you.

she clings to the flag so tightly he might hear the metal whine. she hiccups - and then she stands. the cameras can probably catch the tears streaming down her face.

she should say something, she should say anything, but. she doesn't. maybe that's how it works in those old zombie movies, where the guy comes in with a flamethrower, says a cool line - gets rid of the monsters. this isn't like that. none of her words are good enough, and she doesn't want the silence to last too long. it'd ruin the performance. that was the whole point.

she lifts the flag. and she stabs it downwards as hard as she can, right into his heart.]

[he hates the silence, anyway. dying in a silence that stretched too long... it would be intolerable.

too much like it was years and years ago, in a silent room. never again. not if he can help it.

the tears are a surprise-- should he feel bad about that? does he? there isn't really time to think about it, only to know it, before she finally lifts the flag and stabs it down. a final note, of a sort.

he closes his eyes as she does, still smiling.

fine.]
