A warm welcome to new heroes!

You wake up in a bed, big enough to fit you, no matter your size. Mind your head as you remove yourself from the bed. Getting out of bed, you see dozens and dozens of identical capsule sized "rooms". It seems like it's just you and the other souls who've only recently arrived.

Your usual outfit is folded neatly in the capsule, and your item from home is set aside in your room. It seems whatever force brought you here decided to put you in a superhero themed kigu (Superman, Batman, Captain America, etc).

The lobby of the hotel is not staffed, but there is a single newspaper found in the seating area. There's not too much to explore outside of the capsule hotel at the moment. Just outside is a wall of vending machines, and everything else is taped off with caution tape and small blue penguin-like creatures telling you not to go any further. "It's dangerous, dood!" These penguins are running around with what look like building materials, ducking underneath the caution tape to start rebuilding an absolutely wrecked city.

One of the creatures stands in front of the hotel, "Welcome to Oceanside City, dood! Take these and don't lose them. Sorry the team leads couldn’t meet you yet, they’re busy..."

They hand you a bag with:

• A smartphone in a case of your team's color, emblazoned with the team's animal
• Change for the vending machines
• A boxed lunch

With that, the creature sends you on your way. Time to get to know your new home.

Mm, like a "earn your keep" kinda thing. I'm familiar. [ he's thinking ] Circumstances could definitely be worse, but I guess it depends on what they brought us here for.

[ picking off some pepperoni to eat that instead. ]

Right, just like that. I can't really imagine they brought us here for something easy. Otherwise they wouldn't need this many of us.

Huh, yeah. But it can't be anything too big either. This isn't exactly an amount of people you go to war with.

We also don't know if we're really the only people here. Maybe there's another group in a different part of the city we haven't been able to reach yet.

They'd have to be pretty far out into the city, with how messed up the stuff we can see is.

It goes back to not knowing how big the city is. The city closest to us is made up of a bunch of districts, but all together it's like three hundred miles.

You think this place is that big? [ huh. ] I dunno. I don't see why they'd stick us all together and put all our information on these things [ shakes the phone ] if they were going to do the same to another group somewhere. Seems like kind of a pain.

[resumed]

Maybe not that big, but at least a couple of miles. If we can't even go out into the wreckage, there's no telling what might be on the other side they're keeping us from seeing. [ ...hm... ] There are a few reasons why they'd keep groups separated, but they're not all good either. Usually it has to do with being a part of different...factions.

Aren't we already separated into teams?

[ this is too organized as a system. noms his pizza. ]

It's like...okay. You know how you just said your fleet has a bunch of different divisions? You're all still technically a part of the same group, but you're split up into different teams to do different things. Now imagine there's another fleet elsewhere on the sea staying on a different boat that's also split up into different divisions. You're in the same place, but their fleet and your fleet aren't meant to mix yet because both fleets might be working on different goals or getting different information. Does that make more sense?

[ sorry, he's laughing ]

No, I got what you meant. There's plenty of rival crews in the sea. I meant for this place, that seems a little complicated, especially since no one really strikes me as the kind to just go along and start fighting each other because some guys asked.

[resumed]

Oh. [ okay yes maybe he overcomplicated things but also that's nico as a person. you worry about everything terrible happening all at once. ]

...it's really too early to tell what sort of people are here, but for now it seems like it's calm enough.

I'd agree, but the way everyone's bullying the penguins, it's hard to imagine that kind of scenario!

[resumed]

[ hmm.... ]

You weren't bullying the penguins too, were you? [ he doesn't care either way, he's just curious. ]

Nah, they didn't seem smart enough to have any answers. Plus, it's rude to attack someone who gives you food right off the bat.

[ he's not saying never do it but yknow ]

[ yeah this makes sense to him, even if there's always the possibility the food is cursed. well. oh well. they're all doomed now. ]

Their hospitality's been helpful even if it's still suspicious.

It's all suspicious. Might as well enjoy the food and bed.

[ and shower, ace. your blood. ]

[ ace, your blood. nico is aware of it but does nothing to call him out for it. ]

...this is probably not as weird as it could be for you, is it? Being a pirate and stuff. [ sometimes shit happens and you just go with it. ]

Mmm... That's part of it. I've definitely been dragged into crazy scenarios before. But the whole thing's not as bad as it could be so far either, so I'm focusing on that. [ he leans back a bit ] I don't want to have any regrets. So I try to live to the fullest as much as I can.

[resumed]

[ that gets him to go quiet. it's not...a wrong take to have. nico himself has stood behind the idea of living a full life if you get the chance, about being who you want to be and holding onto your own identity while you're alive.

but hearing the sentiment back is a little jarring when nico also has juggled his own regrets. ]

That isn't a bad way to live, I suppose. [ lightly, like his profile doesn't outright talk about making a better life. ] Has that worked so far?

I'm sure there's people who'd think otherwise, but I haven't had any since I started living like that. [ he grins a little ] Even with choices I've made that haven't ended well, I would've regretted not going through with them if I hadn't made 'em. You know?

[ he is aware he has done some dumb shit things, but he's always acted according to his beliefs, so he'll never regret it!!! this is insane philosophy don't listen to him nico ]

[ he cannot quite agree with that because sometimes terrible choices really do end up with, you know, people being killed and the like. how is it possible not to regret certain things?

...still...maybe it's just because being a pirate means there really isn't time for regrets. things happen quickly sometimes. not everyone can be like nico and hang on to things. ]

I think I understand. In that case, the regret would be creating a situation that you regret in the first place instead of at least trying something to make something better. Or something. [ he picks at his pizza. ] I guess that's the whole point of making choices anyway.

Something like that. [ he has finished his entire pizza, because he is like that, and he looks at nico picking at his ] Maybe some stuff would be different if I'd known more at the time, but I didn't, so there's no point overthinking what ifs.

I think we can agree on that. [ it's not easy, really, but it's something to consider. ] Hopefully that philosophy still works here, too.
